Detroit Drug Crimes Defense Attorney
Possession • Sale • Distribution • Manufacture • Trafficking • Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
Many communities — particularly Detroit — suffer tremendously under the nationwide "war on drugs," which has led to the arrest of so many ordinary citizens. The consequences of a drug crime conviction are often unreasonably harsh:
- You face significant jail or prison time.
- If you hold a professional license, you could lose your career.
- If you are a college student, it can disqualify you from financial aid.
- You can face suspension of driving privileges
If you or a family member has been charged with a felony or misdemeanor drug crime, hire an experienced drug crimes defense lawyer immediately to ensure your rights are protected. Contact the law offices of Stearns & Coppins, PLLC [Link to Contact Us], in Mount Clemens, Warren and Southfield. We defend against all felony and misdemeanor drug charges, including:
- Manufacture and delivery
- Trafficking and smuggling
- Distribution and intent to distribute
- Possession with intent to sell
- Simple drug possession
We have defended people for possession of illegal drugs, such as heroin, cocaine (crack), meth and marijuana, as well as for illegal possession of legal prescription drugs, such as OxyContin, Oxycodone, Percocet, Vicodin, Xanax, Seroquel, Ritalin and amphetamines.
It's important to understand that ANY illegal drug in any amount, even residue in a water pipe or crack pipe, counts the same under the law as a gram. You can still end up in jail.
Medical Marijuana
In 2008, Michigan joined a handful of other states in the union in legalizing the sale and use of marijuana for medical purposes. Doctors must recommend the drug for medicinal purposes and the user must purchase the marijuana from a medical marijuana dispensary or licensed caregiver. Each patient is allowed to grow up to six plants for personal consumption, as long as the total weight is not more than 2.5 ounces of harvested marijuana.
This change in the law does not mean that police will not enforce the current drug laws regarding illegal possession of marijuana. It is still illegal to smoke marijuana in public. Furthermore, marijuana is still illegal under federal law.
If you are charged with drug possession because you had marijuana on your person, in your car, or in your home, you could face large fines and even prison. If you are charged with the less serious charge of marijuana "use," the consequences are not as severe.
